Patriot Volleyball takes first set, but falls in four at Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Francis Marion University took the first set, but Flagler College rallied to take the next three and claim a 25-27, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 win on Friday night (Nov. 2) in Peach Belt Conference volleyball action.

Francis Marion finishes the regular season with a 13-14 record and 4-8 mark in conference play. The Patriots will be the sixth seed in the PBC Tournament, which will be hosted by Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., on Nov. 10-11. The time and opponent for FMU's first tournament match will be determined following the final day of the regular season on Saturday.

Senior Georgia Garrison led FMU with 11 kills, while freshman Iyanla Thigpen chipped in 10 kills and a team-high four blocks. Sophomore Courtney Abdur-Rahim came within one kill of a double-double, registering nine kills and 10 digs.

The setting duo of freshman Finn Millians and senior Carrie McGinnis handed out 21 and 16 assists, respectively, with Millians adding 11 digs to post her seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore libero Natalie Ferrell dug up a team-high 15 balls.

Senior Raquel Kulak led the way for Flagler College (11-14, 5-6), posting match-highs in both kills (19) and blocks (7). Sophomore Karlie Redfern added 13 kills and 19 digs, while senior setter Tara Savisky dished out 51 assists.

Paced by five kills apiece from Garrison and Thigpen, the Patriots withstood a late Saints' rally to take the opening set. Flagler claimed the back-and-forth second set, taking five of the last six points to even the match at one set apiece heading into the intermission.

Francis Marion fell behind by five early in the third set, but rallied back, tying the score four different times before Flagler eventually claimed the set 25-21. In the fourth and final set, the Saints broke a 6-6 deadlock with a 6-0 run from which the Patriots could not recover.
