Jaguars edge Patriots in four sets

AUGUSTA, GA – Despite 10 kills apiece from sophomore Kayla Arthur and freshmen Alyssa Hansen and Iyanla Thigpen, Francis Marion University dropped a four-set decision (25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19) to Augusta University, Friday night (Oct. 26) in Peach Belt Conference volleyball action.

Francis Marion (13-12, 4-6) remains a half-game behind fifth-place Flagler College in the PBC standings.  FMU will face Georgia College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Milledgeville, Ga.

Senior Georgia Garrison and sophomore Courtney Abdur-Rahim followed the trio with six kills each.  Garrison also recorded 13 digs and Thigpen led the Patriots with six blocks.

Senior setter Carrie McGinnis notched her seventh double-double of the season with 29 assists and 10 digs.  Sophomore libero Natalie Ferrell dug up a team-high 24 balls.

Savanna Gonzales led Augusta (19-5, 6-3) with 15 kills and 18 digs, while setter Cheryke Brian-Garmos handed out 41 assists.  Holland Martin registered 32 digs.

FMU led for the majority of the opening set, but a 3-0 spurt by the Jaguars snapped a 21-21 deadlock and proved decisive.  The Patriots sprinted to an early 11-3 lead in set two, but Augusta rallied to tie the score at 19-19.  This time Francis Marion put together the late run, a 4-0 tally, to break a 20-20 tie.

The Patriots registered the first point of the third set, but the Jaguars answered with five straight and never trailed again.  In the fourth set, Francis Marion overcame an early 4-0 deficit to knot the score at 6-6.  FMU trailed by only one at 18-17, but Augusta closed the set and match with a 7-2 run.
