Jaguars overcome early deficit to beat Patriots in 4 sets

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University captured a set-one win, but Augusta University rallied to win the next three sets to claim a 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-7 win, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 29), in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.

Francis Marion drops to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in the Peach Belt.  FMU will host Flagler College on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 1 p.m.

Senior Georgia Garrison paced the Patriots with 15 kills and 11 digs, good for her seventh double-double of the 2018 campaign.  Freshmen Madison Taylor and Iyanla Thigpen added eight kills apiece.

Senior setter Carrie McGinnis handed out 43 assists, while sophomore libero Natalie Ferrell dug up a match-high 26 balls, only two shy of her career best that was set in Friday's win over Georgia College.

Chloe Allen and Alyssa Frazier led Augusta (13-3, 3-1) with 11 kills each, while McKenzey Beck tallied 25 assists, 10 kills, and nine digs.

Playing before a Volleyball Alumni crowd, the Patriots opened Saturday with an exciting 25-21 victory in set one.  A 4-0 spurt by FMU snapped an early 5-5 deadlock and the Patriots never trailed again as Garrison contributed seven of her kills.

With the PBC's leader in service aces Courtney Abdur-Rahim at the back line, FMU opened with the first five points of the second set.  However, the Jaguars rallied to tie the set at 8-8 and would eventually lead 22-17.  The Patriots recovered to deadlock the match at 22-22, but Augusta registered three of the final four points to secure a 25-23 victory.

A 9-3 run by Augusta broke an 11-11 tie and led to the Jaguars' third-set win, and the visitors never trailed in the fourth set.
