The Garrison bombards Bobcats in 4-set win

FLORENCE, SC – Senior Georgia Garrison's career-high tying 25 kills helped lead the Francis Marion University volleyball team to a four-set victory over Georgia College in Peach Belt Conference action on Friday evening (Sept. 28) at Smith University Center.

The Patriots (9-7, 1-2) dropped the first set of the evening, but rallied to claim their first PBC win of the season by a score of 22-25, 29-27, 25-20, and 25-14.

FMU returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Augusta University to wrap-up Alumni Weekend at Smith University Center.  An Alumni match will be played immediately following the FMU-AU contest.

After dropping the first set, the Patriots fended off a pair of set points to even the match at a set apiece going into intermission. The second set featured 13 ties and eight lead changes. Garrison recorded nine kills in the second set alone, including the set-clincher.

FMU took control from there. The Patriots never trailed in the third set, and after the fourth set was deadlocked at nine apiece, the hosts closed out the Bobcats with a 16-5 run.

To go with her 25 kills, Garrison added 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the campaign. Also collecting double-doubles were sophomore Courtney Abdur-Rahim (14 kills and 19 digs) and senior Carrie McGinnis (42 assists and 17 digs). Abdur-Rahim's 19 digs set a new career-high, while her four service aces bumped her PBC-leading total to 36.

Defensively, sophomore libero Natalie Ferrell dug up a career-high 28 balls, while freshman middle blocker Iyanla Thigpen posted a team-high four blocks. Thigpen also recorded the match-clinching kill.

Georgia College (8-7, 1-2) was led by senior Taylor Svehla who registered 13 kills and six blocks. Sophomore Libby Bochniak posted a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs.
