Patriot Volleyball beaten by USC Aiken

AIKEN, SC – The Francis Marion University volleyball team fell in three sets to USC Aiken 25-12, 25-15, and 25-21 in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday (Sept. 22).

The Patriots (8-7, 0-2) will return to the Smith University Center on Friday (Sept. 28) to face Georgia College at 7 p.m. as a part of Volleyball Alumni Weekend.

Freshman Alyssa Hansen paced FMU with seven kills, while freshman Iyanla Thigpen registered five kills and four blocks.

Senior setter Carrie McGinnis dished out 11 assists, and tied for the team lead with seven digs. Sophomore Courtney Abdur-Rahim also chipped in seven digs for the Patriots.

Sophomore Kayla Duggan led USC Aiken (10-2, 1-0) with a match-high 14 kills, while junior Christine Carroll added 11 kills and six blocks.

A pair of big runs helped the Pacers take the first two sets. Leading 9-7 in the opening set, USCA went on a 16-5 run to claim the first set. FMU bounced back to take an 11-8 edge in the second set, but a 17-4 spurt put the Pacers ahead 2-0.

The Patriots held an 18-15 lead in the third and final set, but one last USCA run completed the sweep for the hosts.
