Hartings and Ferrell lead Patriots to sweep of UNCP

PEMBROKE, NC – Senior Erika Hartings led Francis Marion University to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 victory over UNC Pembroke with a match-high nine kills, Friday evening (Nov. 3) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action. Freshman libero Natalie Ferrell posted a career-high 11 digs and anchored a Patriot defense that held the Braves to a .025 hitting percentage.

FMU improves to 8-16 overall and 3-8 in PBC play, while the Braves fall to 4-24 and 0-11.

The Patriots will compete in their final two regular-season matches at home this coming week as Claflin University will visit FMU on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start and Flagler College makes the trip on Nov. 11 with the Senior Day first-serve set for 2 p.m.

Following Hartings was senior Shelbi Meek, who compiled seven kills. Junior Georgia Garrison recorded five kills, dug up 14 balls, and served six aces for FMU.  As a team, FMU had 10 aces compared to none for the Braves.

Junior setter Carrie McGinnis logged 16 assists and four digs, while freshman Tori Carpenter had 15 assists.

Braves' sophomore Makaylah Elliott and junior Aquia Jones led UNC Pembroke with five kills apiece, while Jones and freshman April Tankersley had three blocks each.

After losing the match's opening point, the Patriots scored the next two and never trailed en route to the first set win, putting Francis Marion up 1-0.

After falling down 8-5 early in the second set, FMU rattled off five straight points and did not trail again in the 25-18 win. Following three ties to start the third set, Francis Marion would take a 7-5 advantage and hold off the Braves the rest of the way for the three-set victory.
