Francis Marion claws Cougars in three sets

FLORENCE, SC – For the second straight match, freshman Georgia Garrison paced Francis Marion University as the Patriots concluded their regular season with a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) of Columbus State University, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.

Francis Marion ups its overall mark to 16-13, nearly doubling the squad's win total of 2014, and FMU evens it conference record at 9-9.  As the sixth seed, the Patriots will play at third-seeded Armstrong State University on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in a PBC Tournament quarterfinal match.

Garrison registered a team-high 11 kills and posted a .423 hitting percentage with no errors in 26 total swings.  Senior Alexzandra Reed tallied nine kills and five service aces, while junior middleblocker Caroline Boone added eight kills.

Sophomore libero Shelbi Meek led FMU defensively with 13 digs, while also serving six aces.  Setters Samantha Hinrichs and Carrie McGinnis recorded 18 and 16 assists respectively.

As a team, Francis Marion hit .289 and served 14 aces – a total only eclipsed once this season when the Patriots totaled 16 in the match at Columbus State.

Savannah Miller and Abby King led the Cougars (5-25, 2-16) with eight kills apiece, while setter Cori Ehmen handed out 27 assists and libero Caytlin Merritt dug up 11 balls.

FMU broke an 18-18 deadlock in the opening set with a 7-2 spurt that included a pair of aces by Meek and two kills by junior Carlie Smith.  The Patriots scored the first two points of the second set and never trailed.  In the third set, Columbus State erased an 11-7 deficit with a 7-3 run that knotted the score at 14-14. Francis Marion then rattled off the next four points and did not trail again with an ace by Reed closing out the match.
