Unbeaten Indians hold off Patriots for 2-1 win

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior Dayle McEwen scored on a rebound header with 7:33 remaining, but unbeaten Catawba College held off the Patriots from that point on to claim a 2-1 non-conference victory, Wednesday evening (Sept. 11) in women's soccer action.

FMU sees its record drop to 1-1 while the Indians improve to 2-0.  The Patriots will travel to local-rival Coker University for a 5 p.m. kick-off on Saturday.  That match was originally scheduled for last week, but was postponed due to Hurricane Dorian.

The next home contest for Francis Marion will be on Sept. 21 against USC Beaufort at 3:30 p.m.

Catawba outshot FMU 16-9, but the Patriots owned a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

FMU sophomore goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp recorded six saves, while Catawba senior Shelby Thompson made three stops. The Indians held a 51 percent to 49 percent edge in time of possession.

Catawba snapped a score-less tie in the 28th minute when Shelby Vasich scored on a lofted 20-yard shot from a sharp angle on the right side of the field near the end line.  The Patriots had an opportunity to even the score only 16 seconds later, but freshman Zenia Nava's 15-yard attempt from the left side of the box sail just over the crossbar.

The Indians upped their margin to 2-0 at the 80:12 mark when Sarah Bissett played a nice through ball from the other side of midfield and Callie Hammond ran onto the ball and slotted a 16-yard shot past the on-coming Hennenkamp.

McEwen's score, the 12th of her career, came after a foul was committed by Catawba at a spot 27 yards from goal on the left side of the field.  Sophomore Anna Capra played the ball into the 6-yard box and found the head of sophomore Kiley Barr, but her shot clanged off the crossbar.  However, the ball rebounded to McEwen whose header managed to find its way across the goal line amid traffic.

Pressing now for an equalizing tally, Francis Marion did earn a pair of corner kicks in the 89th minute, but was unable to register another shot.

McEwen and junior Brooke Kennedy led FMU with two shots apiece.
