FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore forward Faith Allen came off the bench and scored in the 71st minute to lift Francis Marion University to a season-opening 1-0 win over Lees-McRae College, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 8) in non-conference women's soccer action.
Francis Marion (1-0) opens its season with a victory for the second time in three years. The Patriots will play host to Catawba College on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
Allen notched her second career goal at the 70:37 mark. Junior Sarah Moll send a nice bending ball from the right side of the midfield ahead of the darting Allen who corralled the ball outside the box, took a dribble, and slotted an 11-yard shot past the Bobcat goalkeeper.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp made that tally stand up as she recorded four saves en route to her second career shutout.
The Patriots outshot Lees-McRae 20-7 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Hope Sanborn registered nine saves in goal for the Bobcats, including several of the diving and leaping variety.
Hennenkamp gained some help from the goal she protected as a 19-yard attempt by Lees-McRae freshman Lianna Smith glanced off the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
Moll and freshman forward Zenia Nava led FMU with four shots apiece.
The Patriots looked to break the scoreless battle in the final minute before halftime, but Sanborn made a sprawling save on a point-blank one-touch attempt by Nana near the six-yard box. The sequence began with FMU sophomore Kiley Barr clearing out a short free kick by the Bobcats in their attacking zone and Allen then racing two-thirds of the field with the ball up the right sideline before crossing the ball to Nava.
