ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Sara Sandberg scored in the 26th minute to help Flagler College defeat Francis Marion University 1-0 in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27).
Francis Marion ends its 2018 season with a 5-10-1 record, and 2-8-0 mark in conference play.
Neither team mounted much offense in the early going, with Flagler (11-3-1, 7-2-1) posting the only shot of the opening 20 minutes.
Sophomore Maria Castorino Mujica began the scoring play for the Saints, playing a long ball down the right wing to senior Annie Breen. Breen crossed it into the box and Sandberg pounced and buried it before the Patriots' defense could clear it away. It was Sandberg's 15th goal of the season, which is tied for the conference lead.
After struggling to create chances in the first half, Francis Marion picked it up after halftime. In the 69th minute, the ball came to freshman Rianna Orello at the top of the Flagler box, but she fired her shot wide. Moments later, sophomore Kylie McElroy corralled a bouncing ball in the box, but had her attempt blocked by the Saints' defense.
Sandberg nearly put Flagler up by two at the 70:24 mark, but FMU freshman goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp made a great kick save at her near post to keep the Patriots within one.
FMU's best chance of the afternoon came in the 82nd minute. McElroy played a through ball to put freshman Kiley Barr through one-on-one, but Barr was denied by Flagler sophomore goalkeeper Sarah-Lisa Dubel.
The Saints outshot the Patriots 12-5 for the afternoon, and took 11 of the contest's 15 corner kicks.
Hennenkamp made three saves in the Francis Marion net, ending her freshman season with a PBC-leading 99 stops. Dubel recorded two saves to pick up the shutout for Flagler.
