Late FMU rally falls short of fourth-ranked Cougars

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University received second-half goals from junior Jessica Garnett and sophomore Kylie McElroy, but the rally fell short as fourth-ranked Columbus State University escaped with a 5-2 victory, Saturday evening (Oct. 20) in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action.

Early in the second stanza, FMU threatened on several trips into the CSU end, but crosses into the box near the goal went unanswered.

The Cougars then scored three times in a span of 5:38 to up their margin to 5-0, including two goals from Olivia Jarrell in the 56th and 61st minutes.

A defender, Garnett gathered a loose ball in the Cougars' defensive end and knocked home a 15-yard shot for her first career score at the 84:12 mark.  Her goal ended a scoreless streak of nearly 422 minutes for the Columbus State defense.  Less than two minutes later, at 86:09, freshman Rianna Orello laid the ball off to McElroy, whose 22-yard shot went through the hands of CSU's back-up goalkeeper and over the goalline.

Columbus State outshot FMU 17-5 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

FMU freshman goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp registered six saves in 61 minutes of work, while junior Micahla Kitchen was not forced into a save during her 29 minutes in goal.  CSU starter Bria Riancho had two saves during her 85 minutes of action.
