Late goals sink Patriot Women at UNC Pembroke
PEMBROKE, NC – UNC Pembroke scored three goals over the final 12:16 to knock off Francis Marion University 3-0 on Wednesday night (Oct. 17) in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action.

FMU (5-7-1, 2-5-0) returns to Hartzler Field on Saturday (Oct. 20) for their final home contest of the regular season against fourth-ranked Columbus State University at 5:30 p.m.

UNC Pembroke (7-4-0, 4-3-0) created more chances in the opening half, outshooting the Patriots 13-5. The Braves' attack forced six saves out of Francis Marion freshman goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp.

Junior Sierra Cartano registered the lone shot on goal for the Patriots in the first half, but her effort was stopped by UNCP junior goalkeeper Gina Ryan. One of Francis Marion's best chances of the half came in the 35th minute. Freshman Kiley Barr won the ball back in the attacking half with a strong tackle, and it was picked up by sophomore Sarah Moll. Moll crossed the ball toward freshman Christina Rice, but it ended up just out of her reach, and the Braves cleared it away.

The Patriots ramped up the pressure after halftime. In the 59th minute, sophomore Emma Hall began a quick counterattack by chipping the ball forward to freshman Rianno Orello, who went around a defender and charged into UNCP territory. Orello played a through ball to freshman Faith Allen, who avoided a defender to create room for a shot, but her strike went right into the arms of Ryan.

Five minutes later, Orello had an opportunity of her own to shoot, but saw her effort hit off of the crossbar. Francis Marion created another terrific chance in the 67th minute, as Barr picked out Hall with a cross. Hall fired one towards the top corner, but had it tipped away by a sprawling Ryan.

The Braves broke the deadlock at the 77:44 mark. An attempted clearance by FMU was deflected right into the path of UNCP senior Stacey Scott. Scott fired a shot that was stopped by Hennenkamp, but the rebound was put in by freshman Bree Mason to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

Mason doubled UNCP's lead less than two minutes later. Following a free kick, junior Kristina Stevenson picked up a loose ball in the FMU penalty area and squared it for Mason, who tapped it home for her second of the evening. The Braves capped off their late barrage with a goal from freshman Maya Grimes at the 88:46 mark.

UNCP held a 30-14 edge in shots for the evening, including a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal. Each team took four corner kicks.

Hennenkamp tied her career-high with 11 saves in the FMU net, while Ryan made six stops for the Braves.
