FMU Women’s unbeaten run snapped at Clayton State

MORROW, GA – Clayton State University scored a pair of goals in each half to knock off Francis Marion University 4-1 in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 13). The loss ends the Patriots' four-match unbeaten run (3-0-1).

FMU (5-6-1, 2-4-0) hits the road on Wednesday (Oct. 17) to face local-rival UNC Pembroke at 7:30 p.m. The Patriots' next home tilt will be the final home contest of the season, Saturday, Oct. 20, against nationally-ranked Columbus State University at 5:30 p.m. on Hartzler Field.

Francis Marion was out on the front foot early, as freshman Abigail Williams forced Clayton State sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Richards into a save just 33 seconds into the contest.

The two teams went nearly 18 minutes before the next shot, as CSU freshman Isabel Massa had an attempt stopped by FMU freshman goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp.

The Lakers (5-4-2, 2-4-0) took the lead just over a minute after that Hennenkamp save. A free kick from freshman Moa Loftman was headed into the center of the box by junior Janne Brouer, and junior Manoly Baquerizo nodded it in to put Clayton State in front.

Francis Marion answered at the 38:35 mark. Sophomore Kylie McElroy picked up a loose ball in the Clayton State box and had an attempt blocked, but the ball came right to freshman Rianna Orello, who tied the match with her third goal of the season.

The hosts regained the advantage with less than three minutes left until halftime, again following a free kick. Loftman once again delivered the ball into the FMU box, and it was headed home by freshman Pia Haug to put Clayton State back in front heading into halftime.

FMU had a great opportunity to tie it up in the 55th minute, as McElroy found herself open in the box. The sophomore rifled a shot on goal, but it went right into the arms of Richards.

After scoring the opener, Baquerizo helped Clayton State pull away in the second half. The junior found Massa with a through ball, and Massa chipped the ball over the charging Hennenkamp to make it 3-1 at the 62:23 mark. Baquerizo capped off her big afternoon with her second goal of the contest in the 88th minute.

Clayton State held a 25-9 edge in shots for the afternoon, and took five of the contest's six corner kicks.

Hennenkamp recorded 10 saves in the FMU net, while Richards made three stops for Clayton State.
