First-half outburst carries Bobcats past Patriots

FLORENCE, SC – Georgia College scored four first-half goals and the Bobcats used that fast start to grab a 5-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Sept. 26) in women's soccer action.

Francis Marion (2-5-0, 0-3-0) will play at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Ga., on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.  The next home match for FMU will be an Oct. 2 tilt with Columbia College at 7 p.m.

FMU sophomore Dayle McEwen accounted for the Patriot score when she converted a penalty kick at the 75:05 mark.  The shot was awarded after a handball call against one of the Bobcats in the box.

Sofia Lekas gave Georgia College (7-1-1, 2-1-1) a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute with an arcing shot from beyond the far right corner of the penalty area.  Kayla Ruiz tallied scores in the 25th and 35th minutes, while Amanda Bartholomew added an unassisted tally in the 31st minute as the Bobcats claimed a 4-0 halftime lead.

Georgia College freshman Madi Diaz Granados recorded her first collegiate goal in the 61st minute on a 19-yard line drive shot following a short corner kick.

McEwen leads the Patriots with six goals and is a perfect 4-for-4 at the penalty spot in only seven matches this season.

FMU freshman goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp posted her second consecutive double-digit save effort as she turned away 10 Bobcat attempts – one shy of her career high.  Georgia College senior Ashlee Graham played the opening 73:07 and registered three saves.

Georgia College outshot the Patriots 24-7 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.  The Bobcats were among the other teams receiving votes in this week's NCAA Division II Top-25 poll.

McEwen and junior Carli Gauthier led FMU with two shots apiece.
