McEwen's late header lifts Patriots past Mars Hill

SALISBURY, NC – Sophomore Dayle McEwen headed home the lone goal of the match in the 78th minute to give the Francis Marion University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Mars Hill University on Friday evening (Sept. 7) in the opening match of the Catawba College Tournament.

With the victory, the Patriots move to 6-0-0 all-time against the Lions, while outscoring them 25-0.

FMU's next match is Sunday against the host Catawba College at 3 p.m. The Patriots will return to Hartzler Field on Saturday, Sept. 15, for their Peach Belt Conference opener against the University of North Georgia.

FMU (2-1-0) had the better of the chances in the first half, with McEwen and freshmen Rianna Orello and Kiley Barr forcing saves from Mars Hill goalkeeper Tonje Jorgensen. Francis Marion's defense held the Lions (1-3-0) to just one shot in the opening stanza.

From there, the Patriots defense held on, keeping the Lions from attempting a shot over the final 13 minutes of the match.
