FMU’s McEwen charms Cobras with two scores in 4-2 win

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Dayle McEwen sparked a four-goal outburst in the final 24 minutes allowing Francis Marion University to rally for a 4-2 victory over local-rival Coker College, Wednesday (Sept. 5) in non-conference women's soccer action.

FMU evens its season mark at 1-1-0 and remains unbeaten all-time against the Cobras at 5-0-0.  The Patriots will play in the Catawba College Tournament this weekend in Salisbury, N.C.  Francis Marion will face Mars Hill University on Friday at 5 p.m. and the host Indians on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The next home match for FMU will be Sept. 15 against nationally ranked University of North Georgia at 2 p.m.

Francis Marion outshot Coker 19-7, while the Cobras held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Despite being outshot 11-2 in the first stanza, Coker claimed the only score of the opening 45 minutes with an own goal off a corner kick by Gaby Sturla at the 31:37 mark.

Still trailing 1-0 and entering the 67th minute, the Patriots found the back of the net on four of their final five shots.  McEwen knotted the contest at 1-1 with a penalty kick score at 66:18.  FMU freshman Faith Allen earned the penalty kick when she was taken down in the box by Coker goalkeeper Alexandra Brown.

Allen then put the Patriots on top 2-1 with her first collegiate goal in the 71st minute.  She corralled a cross from sophomore Megan Misuraca and sent a sliding first-touch volley shot over the goal line.

The FMU advantage increased to 3-1 at the 75:49 mark when McEwen scored on an 8-yard shot.  Her initial shot of the sequence was stopped by Brown, but the ball rebounded to the feet of Allen at the endline who then deftly laid the ball off to the Collinsville, Ill., native who was successful on her second attempt.

Coker drew to within 3-2 when Lillia Rodriguez scored in the 78th minute, with an assist going to Sturla.

However, the Patriots added an insurance tally at the 83:45 mark when sophomore Sarah Moll scored on a 13-yard attempt.  The sequence began with junior Sierra Cartano playing the ball up the right sideline to sophomore Kylie McElroy who found Moll in the penalty area with a cross.

FMU freshman goalkeeper Rachael Hennenkamp registered her first collegiate win by posting four saves, while Brown recorded six saves.

McEwen led the Patriots with eight shots, five of which were on target.  Eight different Patriots registered shots in the contest.
