Mountain Lions clip Patriot women 2-0

YOUNG HARRIS, GA – Young Harris College scored twice in the opening seven minutes and then made those tallies stand up for a 2-0 victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7) in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action.

Francis Marion (3-6-0, 0-5-0) will play at USC Aiken on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.  The next home contest for the Patriots will be Oct. 14 against Columbus State University at 4:30 p.m.

The Mountain Lions (6-2-1, 3-0-1) outshot FMU 28-6, with both teams earning three corner kicks.

Lucero Robayo scored on a 20-yard free kick at the 3:07 mark to put Young Harris up 1-0. The margin doubled at the 6:25 mark when Baylee Roche headed in a free kick from Cristina Moreno.

Despite the two early scores, the improved Patriot defense held the Mountain Lions scoreless for the rest of the match.  FMU has allowed only 2.2 goals per match compared to 5.5 last season.

Francis Marion sophomore goalkeeper Micahla Kitchen recorded seven saves, while Nicole Medeiros had four stops for the Mountain Lions.

Three freshmen – Kylie McElroy, Holly Bowman, and Dayle McEwen – accounted for the Patriot shots with two apiece. Both McElroy attempts came in the final 10 minutes and forced saves by Medeiros.  Bowman also had a shot on target in the final 10 minutes.
