FMU women’s soccer wins an OT thriller at Coker College

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Freshman defender Dayle McEwen came up clutch in the second overtime with a goal to give the Francis Marion University women's soccer team a 2-1 win in non-conference collegiate soccer action against Coker College, Saturday evening (Sept. 16)..

After a thrilling game, the Patriots move to 3-1-0 on the campaign, while the Cobras drop to 1-3-1. The 3-1-0 start is the best for Francis Marion in 14 seasons.

The next match for FMU will be played in Dahlonega, Ga. against the University of North Georgia on Sep. 23 at 4:30 p.m. as they open up conference play. The next home match is set for Sept. 30 versus PBC member Clayton State University at 3 p.m. on Hartzler Field.

The only score for the Cobras came early in the matchup. In the third minute of play, senior Lexi Garcia set up her fellow senior teammate Phoebie Eshen nicely on the right wing, where Eshen struck the ball past the Patriots' goalkeeper Janine Gordon to make the score 1-0.

Coker's freshman goalkeeper Samantha Hoffman was solid for most of the game as she saved 10 goals, seven of which were in the first half of play. As time was running out in the game though, Francis Marion got an opportunity as McEwen passed the ball to freshman Kylie McElroy inside the penalty box and she chipped it over Hoffman's head to tie the game up with only 2:38 remaining.

The Cobras came back in the last minute of regulation with a chance, as sophomore Grayson Chappell missed wide left with a header off of a corner kick.

After a scoreless first overtime, the Patriots made an early opening count in the second overtime as FMU freshman defender Holly Bowman sent a corner kick into the six-yard box where McEwen put the ball into the back of the net to give Francis Marion the victory. McEwen has three scores this season, two of which are match-winners.

Gordon tallied five saves in the 101:33 of play.
