FMU women’s soccer blanks Mount Olive in 4-0 victory

MT. OLIVE, N.C. – Francis Marion University women's soccer team had four different players with goals as they shutout the University of Mount Olive on Thursday night (Sept. 14) by a score of 4-0 in non-conference collegiate women's soccer action.

The Patriots (2-1) moved over the .500 mark in the young campaign, while the Trojans fell to 0-3.

FMU will be on the road on Saturday as they compete against Coker College at 4:30 p.m.

Within the first 10 minutes of play, the Patriots had four shots with one of them being put into the back of the net by freshman Megan Misuraca at the 7:53 mark. Assisted by fellow freshmen Imani McGee and Kylie McElroy, this was Misuraca's second goal of her collegiate career.

Forward Kylie McElroy doubled Francis Marion's score in the 27th minute with a rebound shot off a saved header by sophomore Sierra Cartano that came on a well-placed corner kick by freshman Dayle McEwen.

McEwen slipped through the back of the Trojan defense as she delivered her second goal of the season off of a free kick. This came just two minutes after halftime and upped the margin to 3-0.

The Patriots then had back-to-back chances within one minute by sophomore Carli Gauthier and senior Breanna Henderson, but both were denied by the Mount Olive goalkeeper Abigail Ross.

Gauthier topped off Francis Marion's win with a 30-yard strike with just under 18 minutes left in the game, making the final score 4-0.

FMU outshot the Trojans 11-9 in the game, and also had seven corner kicks compared to Mount Olive's one.

The Patriots' junior goalie Janine Gordon had three saves, while Ross had two.
