Woods sparks Francis Marion to 75-54 win over Claflin

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore center Zaria Woods connected for 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor to lead Francis Marion University to a 2-0 start following a 75-54 non-conference win over Claflin University, Monday (Nov. 18) evening in women's basketball action.

Francis Marion will return to action on Wednesday at Chowan University with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off time. The team will be back in the Smith University Center on Saturday (Nov. 23) as the Patriots host Queens University of Charlotte at 1:30 p.m.

Woods also snagged five rebounds. Junior forward Kiana Adderton recorded 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while senior guard Abigail Bullock shot 4-8 from the field and 3-5 from beyond the arc for 11 points.

The Lady Panthers (0-3) were led by Dionna Long with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Shakarri Mack had 10 points and seven rebounds. Dashia Jackson led the Lady Panthers with 10 rebounds and recorded seven points.

FMU trailed 5-4 with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter, but outscored Claflin 19-3 over the remainder of the period to lead 23-8 as the horn sounded. The Patriot advantage expanded to 19 points at 27-8 after a three-point play by Woods at the 8:26 mark.  The Lady Panthers then narrowed the margin to 34-26 with a 16-5 spurt to close out the first half.

In the third quarter, the Patriots exploded for 27 third-quarter points, on 60 percent shooting, to assume a 61-41 lead.  Francis Marion would lead by as many as 24 in the final period.

The Patriots shot 42.4 percent from the field, including 8-of-23 from beyond the arc. The FMU defense held Claflin to 27.9 percent shooting from the field, while the Lady Panthers hit 13-of-21 free throws. Francis Marion outrebounded Claflin 52-41.
