Patriot Women edged by Saints on Homecoming, 63-60

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University kept the contest close, but could not quite recover from a 10-point halftime deficit, falling 63-60 to third-place Flagler College in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23).

Francis Marion (10-14, 7-13) is back at the Smith University Center on Wednesday night (Feb. 27) at 5:30 p.m. for Senior Night against local-rival UNC Pembroke. The Patriots and Braves are tied for eighth in the Peach Belt standings with two games remaining in the regular season. The top-8 teams make it to next month's PBC Tournament.

Sophomore Kiana Adderton, junior guard Abigail Bullock, and senior Shaunice Fulmore paced FMU's offense with 14 points apiece, while freshman center Zaria Woods chipped in 10. Adderton also collected a career-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Graduate student forward Briana Burgins had eight points, eight rebounds, and a pair of steals. Burgins' two thefts moved her past Shannon Singleton-Bates and Brenda Cain and into ninth place on Francis Marion's career steal list with 220.

Both Fulmore and Burgiona also moved up on a pair of PBC career lists: Fulmore to seventh in career scoring with 1,827 points and Burgins to 13th in rebounding with 874.

Senior 6-5 center Tabitha Odabe posted a game-high 28 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the way for the Saints (19-7, 15-5).

Trailing 62-52 with 2:52 to go in the fourth quarter, FMU began a furious rally. A pair of Adderton free throws and back-to-back Woods layups brought the Patriots within four with 42 seconds remaining. On the next Flagler possession, Fulmore corralled a Saints' miss, and then nailed a jumper at the other end to make it 62-60. After the visitors split a couple of three throws, FMU had the ball with a chance to tie the contest in the final seconds, but could not convert.

Flagler took an 11-4 edge just past the halfway mark of the opening period, but Francis Marion closed the gap back to 15-11 at the end of the first.

FMU got within two at 17-15 after a pair of free throws by Burgins 45 second into the second quarter, but that was as close as the Patriots got for the remainder of the half. The Saints' advantage fluctuated between four and seven points until junior guard Dayuna Johnson hit a three-pointer to make it 33-23 Flagler heading into intermission.

The Patriots netted the first four points after the half to whittle the deficit to six, and then drew within three at the 4:39 mark when Bullock drained one of her four three-pointers. Fulmore scored 10 of her 14 points in the third quarter and brought Francis Marion within a point twice, but Flagler was able to cling to the lead and take a 49-44 advantage into the final period.

Bullock knocked down two more triples in the fourth to bring FMU within one possession of Flagler, but each time the visitors responded. Following a Bullock three-pointer which made it 53-50, the Saints went on a 9-2 run to bring their advantage to 62-52 with 2:52 remaining.

FMU went 24-of-67 (35.8 percent) from the field for the contest, including 5-of-16 from long range. The Patriots knocked down 7-of-10 at the free throw line. Flagler hit 26-of-59 (44.1 percent) from the floor, and made just one of its seven three-point tries. The Saints connected on 10-of-18 at the charity stripe.

The Patriots outrebounded the Saints 40-34, including a 19-11 advantage on the offensive glass, leading to a 15-9 edge in second-chance points.
