Third-Quarter run spurs Lady Pacers past FMU 64-53

AIKEN, SC – USC Aiken outscored Francis Marion University 16-4 over the final eight minutes of the third quarter and used that run to claim a 64-53 Peach Belt Conference win over the Patriots, Wednesday night (Feb. 6) in women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (8-10, 5-9) will play host to Clayton State University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. as part of the program's annual Play 4 Kay contest.

Sophomore forward Kiana Adderton led FMU with 16 points and three blocks, while graduate student Briana Burgins chipped in 13 points and six rebounds and senior Shaunice Fulmore added 10 points.

Kyrie' Chandler paced USCA (12-9, 8-7) with 19 points and Melyk Taouil tallied 15 points and six rebounds coming off the bench.

The first quarter saw the teams never separated by more than one possession and the score was deadlocked at 16-16 as the horn sounded.  USCA opened up a 25-20 margin the second period, but a 7-1 run by the Patriots – capped by an Adderton fast-break jumper – put FMU ahead 27-26.  However, a basket in the paint by Taouil with three ticks left gave the Lady Pacers a 30-29 advantage at halftime.

A pair of buckets by Fulmore and one by Burgins sparked a 6-2 spurt by Francis Marion to open the second half that produced a 35-32 FMU lead.  USCA responded by outscoring the Patriots 16-4 over the final eight minutes of the quarter and held a 48-39 margin heading to the fourth period.

A bucket by FMU 6-2 junior center Tatyana McClaney trimmed the margin to 48-41 two minutes into the final quarter.  The Lady Pacers would push the lead to 11 on several occasions before Francis Marion made one final rally.  A long pass from junior Abigail Bullock found Burgins alone for a lay-in at the 1:37 mark as FMU crept to within 59-53.  However on the ensuing possession, Taouil hit a three-pointer as the shot clock was expiring to clinch the outcome.

Francis Marion shot 38.0 percent from the floor and hit 13-of-17 free throws.  USCA connected on 43.1 percent of its shots, including 6-of-10 from three-point range, and the Pacers were 14-of-20 at the foul line.
