Saints rally past Patriots in final period 67-61

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Flagler College held Francis Marion University to only three field goals and nine points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 67-61 victory over the Patriots, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) in women's basketball action.

FMU (8-7, 5-6) travels up Interstate 95 on Wednesday for a match-up with local rival UNC Pembroke at 5:30 p.m.  The next home contest for the Patriots will be Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. against Georgia College.

Senior Shaunice Fulmore led FMU with 28 points on 13-of-23 shooting, while sophomore Kiana Adderton scored 16 points.  Fulmore and graduate student Briana Burgins each hauled down a team-high seven rebounds.  Burgins passed Jontell Johnson (1999-2003) for eighth position on the FMU career rebounding list with 822, while Fulmore moved into the 24th spot with 596.

Chris Wilson paced the Saints (12-5, 8-3) with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Kierra Crane added 15 points.  Senior 6-5 center Tabitha Odabe posted her own double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots.

The Patriots owned a 52-48 advantage heading into the final quarter.  A pair of free throws by Adderton kept the margin at three (57-54) with 6:56 remaining, but six straight points by Flagler put the Saints up 60-57.  A running jumper by Fulmore brought FMU to within 60-59 with 2:27 left, but the Patriots managed only one more basket and that came in the final 20 seconds after Flagler had taken a 65-59 advantage.  

Flagler took an early 10-4 lead, but Francis Marion rattled off nine straight points – the final five by Fulmore – to go up 13-10.  The Saints retook the lead at 15-13, but FMU claimed a 19-17 lead when Fulmore scored on a lay-up with one tick left in the opening quarter.

Flagler led by four on several occasions in the second period, but FMU knotted the score at 30-30 and a steal and lay-up by Fulmore.  A three-pointer by Adderton put Francis Marion ahead 33-30, but a  late free throw enable Flagler to leave the floor at intermission holding a 36-35 margin.

The two squads traded brief runs in the third quarter: FMU once leading 39-36, but Flagler going up 42-39 and then Francis Marion taking a 46-42 advantage.  Three consecutive points by Fulmore helped FMU to its 52-48 lead as the horn sounded to end the third.

Francis Marion connected on 39.7 percent of its field goal attempts, including 5-of-16 from behind the three-point arc, and the Patriots hit 6-of-10 free throws.  Flagler shot 47.5 percent from the floor, including 5-of-15 from long range, and was 6-of-8 at the charity stripe.

The Patriots committed a season-low seven turnovers and led 19-10 in points off turnovers.
