Late run helps Patriot Women dispatch Jaguars

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University used an 11-0 run, fueled by five points from junior guard Abigail Bullock, in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to knock off Augusta University 61-48, Wednesday night (Jan. 23) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball.

The Patriots (8-6, 5-5) hit the road for their next two contests, starting Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) when they visit Flagler College at 1:30 p.m. FMU returns to the Smith University Center on Saturday, Feb. 2, to take on Georgia College at 1:30 p.m.

Senior Shaunice Fulmore led Francis Marion with 17 points. Joining Fulmore in double-figures were graduate student forward Briana Burgins and sophomore forward Kiana Adderton who chipped in 13 points apiece. All three grabbed six rebounds, while Burgins and Fulmore both picked up a game-high four steals. Junior 6-2 center Tatyana McClaney came off the bench to record four blocks.

Burgins' four thefts move her into 16th position on the Patriot career steals list with 203.

Senior forward Brianna Middleton was the lone player to reach double-figures for Augusta (3-13, 2-8) with 17. Freshman guard Jaelyn Autman collected a game-high eight rebounds.

After leading by as many as seven early in the fourth quarter, FMU's advantage shrunk to two after a Middleton layup with 7:09 remaining made it 46-44. The Patriots responded with an 11-0 run, during which they held the Jaguars without a point for 6:37 to pull away.

Augusta started quickly, grabbing an 8-2 lead in the opening few minutes. The Jaguars led by as many as seven in the first quarter, but FMU responded with the final seven points of the period to tie it up at 15-15 after one.

Francis Marion's run continued into the second quarter, and the Patriots led 19-15 before Augusta ripped off the next 11 in a row to once again build a seven-point cushion. Fulmore and Burgins combined to score the next seven straight for FMU to tie the game up at 26-26 going into halftime.

Neither team led by more than three until the 2:48 mark of the third quarter, when a McClaney basket and a pair of Adderton free throws gave the Patriots their biggest lead to that point at 41-34. FMU led 42-38 heading into the final period.

Following FMU's 11-0 fourth quarter run, Bullock and Fulmore iced the game by each knocking down a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds.

In the second half, Francis Marion shot 11-for-20 (55 percent) from the floor, and outscored Augusta 35-22.

For the game, FMU went 21-for-48 (43.8 percent) from the field, and made 17-of-26 from the charity stripe. The 48 points allowed by the Patriot defense was their lowest total of the season, and they held the Jaguars to 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field, and just 3-of-20 from beyond the arc. Augusta knocked down only 5-of-8 from the foul line.

Francis Marion enjoyed a 39-31 edge on the glass, and assisted on 16 of its 21 made field goals.
