FMU Women rally in fourth quarter for 74-73 win over Cougars

FLORENCE, SC – Graduate student Briana Burgins registered a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and freshman center Zaria Woods scored a career-high 15 points, 12 in the second half, to rally Francis Marion University to a 74-73 win over Columbus State University, Monday afternoon (Jan. 21) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots improve to 7-6 overall and 4-5 in the Peach Belt.  FMU will conclude its three-game home stand on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. against Augusta University on Faculty Appreciation Night.

Burgins shot 5-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line and added three steals.  It was her third double-double of the season and the 18th of her career.  The High Point native climbed two rungs on the Patriot career scoring list to 23rd position with 1,171 points (passing LaRue Fields and Cherita Linton). She also passed Brenda Cain for ninth position on the FMU career rebounding list with 809.

Woods connected on 7-of-9 field goal attempts and pulled down five rebounds.  Senior Shaunice Fulmore and sophomore Kiana Adderton each added 13 points for FMU.  Adderton grabbed eight caroms.

Senior guard Tatiana Wayne led Columbus State (8-6, 5-5) with 19 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Naomi Holloway chipped in 15 points coming off the bench.  Fulmore and Wayne entered the contest ranked first and second in the PBC in scoring.

Fulmore gave Francis Marion a late 72-70 lead when she collected an offensive rebound and hit a short jumper in the lane with 39 seconds remaining.  The Patriots came up with a steal on the ensuing CSU possession and junior guard Abigail Bullock stretched the margin to 73-70 with 1-of-2 free throws.  Following a Cougar timeout that advanced the ball to midcourt, FMU forced a five-second call on the inbounds.

A free throw by Adderton with three ticks remaining upped the margin to 74-70 before Leeaysia Williamson hit a three-pointer at the final horn.

Francis Marion connected on 18-of-31 field goals attempts (58.1%) in the second half after shooting just 34.4 percent over the opening 20 minutes.

CSU led 21-18 at the end of the first quarter and extended that margin to 41-30 at halftime.

A basket by Holloway to open the third quarter upped the Patriot deficit to 43-30, but Adderton and Fulmore fueled a 15-2 spurt to tie the game at 45-45.  After a trio of further deadlocks, Kaihla Carter beat the third period buzzer with a basket to put CSU on top 53-51.

FMU trailed 61-55 with 7:36 remaining in the contest.  Woods made a pair of layups bookended around a Burgins' free throw to draw FMU within 61-60.  Following a CSU bucket, Burgins scored on a fast-break jumper and junior 6-2 center Tatyana McClaney contributed a pair of inside hoops to knot the score at 66-66 with 2:14 on the clock.

Francis Marion shot 46.0 percent for the game and hit 13-of-20 free throws, while CSU connected on 40.3 percent of its field goal attempts and was 14-of-21 at the foul line.
