Patriot Women fall at home to GSW

FLORENCE, SC – Georgia Southwestern State University rode a 17-point advantage in the third quarter to claim a 77-56 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (6-6, 3-5) will host Columbus State University on Monday for an MLK Day afternoon matinee with a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.

For the second consecutive game, junior guard Abigail Bullock led FMU, this time with 15 points and four steals.  Graduate student Briana Burgins and freshman center Zaria Woods each added nine points apiece. Burgins passed Christy Thomas to move into 25th position on the Patriot career scoring list with 1,156 points and moved into the Top-10 on the career rebounding list with 798.

FMU junior 6-2 center Tatyana McClaney hauled down a team-high nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

Guard Brianna Perry led four Georgia Southwestern (8-6, 5-3) players in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

The two squads combined to shoot 6-for-23 in the opening quarter.  FMU took a 7-2 lead, but GSW rallied to within 8-7 as the period ended.

A three-pointer by Bullock knotted the score at 21-21 with 3:32 left before halftime, but the Hurricanes closed the half with a 7-1 spurt to grab a 28-22 advantage at intermission.

GSW connected on 11-of-19 shots in the third period and outscored FMU 31-14 to assume a commanding 59-36 lead.

A free throw by Burgins trimmed the margin to 62-46 with 6:53 remaining in the game, but that was as close as the Patriots would get.

Francis Marion finished the game shooting 35.7 percent, while making 13-of-22 free throws.  GSW connected on 38.8 percent of its field goal attempts, including 10-of-22 from behind the three-point arc, and drained 15-of-20 shots at the foul line.
