Fulmore scores 28, but Patriots fall to Lakers

MORROW, GA – Senior forward Shaunice Fulmore scored 28 points, but it was not enough as Francis Marion University fell 80-60 at Clayton State University on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots (6-4, 3-3) will be on the road once again on Wednesday (Jan. 16) as they visit Lander University at 5:30 p.m. Francis Marion will return to the Smith University Center to face Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 p.m.

Fulmore, the conference's leading scorer, tallied 19 of her 28 points in the second half as she tried to help Francis Marion rally from a double-digit deficit. A personal 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter helped the Patriots climb within five, before the Lakers (8-4, 4-2) responded with 10 straight to put the game beyond FMU's reach.

Saturday's contest was the sixth time this season Fulmore has scored more than 20 points, and fifth time scoring 25 or more. The Lake City native also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Graduate student forward Briana Burgins was the lone other Patriot in double-figures with 12. Junior guard Abigail Bullock handed out six assists, one shy of her career-high.

Four Lakers scored in double-figures, led by sophomore Tatiana Foster and junior Taneria Wilson who had 16 apiece. Senior Velencia Johnson added 12 points and a game-high five steals, while senior Monica Alexander chipped in 11.

After a back-and-forth start, Francis Marion put together an 11-4 stretch in the first quarter to open-up a 15-9 advantage, thanks in large part to eight points from Burgins. The Patriots led by as many as seven in the period, and held an 18-13 edge after one.

Clayton State quickly erased the deficit, using an 11-2 spurt to move in front 22-20 with 6:06 remaining in the first half. The Lakers went on to outscore Francis Marion 23-14 in the second quarter to take a 36-32 lead into halftime.

A layup by Fulmore drew the Patriots within two to start the second half, but six straight by Johnson put the Lakers back up by eight, 42-34. Johnson's personal run began a 13-2 spurt that stretched CSU's lead into double-digits for the first time at 49-36. Fulmore scored 10 of FMU's 13 points in the quarter, but Francis Marion trailed 59-45 heading into the fourth.

Fulmore's seven straight points coupled with FMU's defense holding Clayton State without scoring for 3:31 helped the Patriots make a run to start the fourth quarter. At the 7:01 mark, a pair of Burgins' free throws brought the visitors to within five at 59-54. The Lakers countered with 10 straight to squash FMU's comeback attempt.

For the afternoon, the Patriots went 22-for-59 from the field and made 13-of-19 from the charity stripe. The Lakers connected on 31-of-64 field goal attempts and hit 12-of-15 from the foul line.
