Fulmore’s 26 leads Patriot Women past Pacers

FLORENCE, SC – Senior forward Shaunice Fulmore poured in 26 points to help Francis Marion University to a 75-57 win over USC Aiken, Wednesday night (Jan. 9) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Next up for the Patriots (6-3, 3-2) will be a pair of road tilts, starting with a visit to Clayton State University on Saturday (Jan. 12) at 1:30 p.m. Francis Marion will return to the Smith University Center to face Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 p.m.

With her 26 points, Fulmore moved past former Patriot guard Christy Wright for eighth on the FMU career scoring list and 13th on the PBC career list with 1,568 career points. Graduate student forward Briana Burgins added 19 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to pass Lisa Waldrop and move into 12th on Francis Marion's career rebounding list with 783. Junior guard Abigail Bullock chipped in 15 points and a career-high seven assists.

Freshman Grace Crawford was the lone player to reach double-figures for the Pacers (8-5, 4-3) with 11. Sophomore Kwajelin Farrar added seven points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds while also recording a game-high five blocks.

USC Aiken scored eight of the contest's first 10 points, but Francis Marion answered with a 16-0 run to race out to an 18-8 lead. The Patriots led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter, thanks in large part to nine points coming off of eight Pacer turnovers.

The Pacers responded with a 14-2 run to regain the advantage at 23-22 halfway through the second quarter. Following a timeout, a Fulmore jumper put the Patriots back on top for good. Francis Marion extended the lead back to nine at 38-29 on a Bullock three-pointer which just beat the halftime buzzer.

FMU extended its lead to 51-33 midway through the third quarter with an 8-0 spurt, during which USC Aiken went 4:41 without scoring. The Patriots led 55-40 heading into the final stanza.

The Patriots put the game beyond doubt early in the fourth, beginning the period with a 10-0 run (6 from Fulmore and 4 from Burgins) to stretch the advantage to 65-40. Francis Marion led by 17 points or more for the remainder of the contest.

FMU went 29-for-65 from the field (44.6 percent), and hit 9-of-24 from beyond the arc. USC Aiken shot 40.0 percent from the field (22-of-55) and connected on eight of its 19 three-point attempts.

Francis Marion's defense forced a season-high 29 turnovers, and outscored USCA 34-13 on points-off-of-turnovers.  Both Fulmore and Bullock registered four steals apiece.

FMU has won four straight in the long-time series that dates back to 1979, and the Patriots now lead 52-30.
