Adderton, Fulmore propel Patriot Women to win at Claflin

ORANGEBURG, SC – Senior Shaunice Fulmore scored 25 points and sophomore Kiana Adderton added 17 off the bench to help Francis Marion University knock off Claflin University 67-49, Friday night (Dec. 14) in non-conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots (3-2) continue their three-game road trip on Monday (Dec. 17) as they visit Georgia Southwestern State University at 1 p.m. FMU returns to the Smith University Center on Saturday, Jan. 5, to face Young Harris College at 1:30 p.m.

Fulmore's 25 points were a game-high, and helped her pass former Patriot forward Martha Williamson and move into 13th place on the FMU career scoring list with 1,482 points. In her first game since transferring to Francis Marion from Division I Wright State University, Adderton's 17 points and seven rebounds came in 22 minutes off the bench.

FMU graduate student forward Briana Burgins was just shy of a double-double, scoring 10 points and collecting a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Camryn Johnson handed out a season-high five assists.

Graduate student Ashley Fields led the way for Claflin (6-6) with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The contest marked only the second trip for the Patriots to Orangeburg since 2000 and is Francis Marion's first victory on Claflin's home court since Feb. 1, 1986.

The Lady Panthers got off to a 4-2 start, but Francis Marion responded with a 10-2 run to open-up a 12-6 advantage. Claflin rallied to regain the lead briefly at 13-12, but an Adderton triple gave FMU a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Fulmore (9 points) and Adderton (7 points) accounted for 16 of the Patriots' 17 points in the period.

Adderton's triple sparked a 23-3 Francis Marion run, which stretched the margin to 20, at 37-17. The Patriots scored 16 straight at one point during the run, including three-pointers on three consecutive trips by Fulmore, sophomore guard Macy Passmore, and Adderton. Passmore's triple accounted for her first career points, after missing much of her freshman season with injury.

FMU's defense held Claflin without any points for 4:57 during the 16-0 spurt. The Patriots took a 39-21 lead into halftime, with Fulmore and Adderton pouring in 15 points apiece in the opening 20 minutes.

A 7-0 Francis Marion run early in the third stretched the visitors' advantage to 24, at 50-26. The Lady Panthers closed the third by scoring the final seven, trimming the FMU lead to 52-35.

The Patriots stepped up their defense to start the final quarter, holding Claflin without a point for the first 4:31 of the fourth. The defensive effort helped ignite a 9-0 run which gave FMU its biggest lead of the night at 61-35, and put the game out of reach.

FMU went 27-for-62 from the field (43.5 percent), including 8-of-15 from beyond the arc. The Patriots' defense limited Claflin to 33.3 percent from the field (16-for-48), and three triples on 13 attempts. The Lady Panthers made 14-of-19 from the foul line.

Francis Marion out-rebounded Claflin 42-32, including a 17-10 advantage on the offensive glass. Defensively, the Patriots forced 20 turnovers, the third time this season they forced 20 or more.
