Patriot Women fall despite career-high 34 from Fulmore

FLORENCE, SC – Senior Shaunice Fulmore scored a career-high 34 points, but it was not enough as Francis Marion University fell 88-83 to the University of Mount Olive on Tuesday night (Nov. 27) in non-conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots (2-1) return to action on Saturday (Dec. 1) as they open up Peach Belt Conference play against 16th-ranked University of North Georgia. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Fulmore's 34-point effort was the second time in her career she scored at least 30 points, and the 24th time she has poured in 20 or more. Graduate student forward Briana Burgins collected Francis Marion's first double-double of the young season, adding a season-high 25 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard De'Ja Marshall came just a point shy of posting a double-double, chipping in nine points and 11 boards.

Mount Olive (3-2) was led by 5-11 senior Felecity Havens, who scored a school-record 49 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Junior Jada Bacchus added 10 points and five steals for the Trojans.

Haven's tally was the third-highest single-game total in the history of the Smith University Center, behind a 60-point effort by Francis Marion legend Pearl Moore in 1978 and a 52-point outburst by Nessie Harris of the College of Charleston in a 1977 regional tournament contest against Union College.

Havens came out hot for Mount Olive, scoring eight points in the opening four minutes to give the visitors an early 14-5 advantage. The Patriots responded with a 10-0 run to briefly grab their first lead of the evening, but trailed 21-20 at the end of the first quarter.

Fulmore scored FMU's first seven points of the second quarter, but Havens answered with the first nine of the second for UMO. Her points sparked an 11-2 Trojans' run near the halfway mark of the quarter that extended the margin to seven.  The Patriots trimmed the deficit to 41-39 heading into intermission.

Francis Marion opened the second half with an 8-0 spurt, keyed by six points from Burgins, to take its largest lead of the evening at 47-41. Following a Trojans' timeout, the visitors answered by scoring the next eight to go back in front 49-47. Down by four in the final minute of the third quarter, FMU scored the final five points, capped by a Burgins three-point play, which gave the Patriots a 62-61 edge heading into the final quarter.

The Patriots quickly extended their lead to four in the first minute of the fourth on a three-point play by senior guard Alliyah Gillespie. Mount Olive answered with a 9-0 run to go up 70-65. A bucket by Fulmore and two Burgins free throws trimmed the deficit back to one, but Havens hit a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, sparking an 11-3 run which stretched the margin to 12 at 84-72. Francis Marion fought its way back in the final minute, with a Burgins layup drawing FMU within three at 86-83 with 20 ticks remaining. However, the Trojans hit a couple of free throws in the final few seconds to stave off the Patriot rally.

FMU went 28-for-71 from the field (39.4 percent) and made 25-of-33 from the free throw line. Mount Olive hit 28-of-61 field goal attempts, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Trojans connected on 27-of-33 from the charity stripe.

Francis Marion out-rebounded UMO 46-32, including a 23-10 advantage on the offensive glass. The contest featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes.
