Gillespie sparks second-half rally as FMU wins 61-54

WINGATE, NC – Senior guard Alliyah Gillespie scored a career-high 15 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range, to spark Francis Marion University to a come-from-behind 61-54 win over 21st-ranked Wingate University, Tuesday evening (Nov. 13) in non-conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots (1-0) begin their home slate on Monday (Nov. 19) at 6 p.m. against Chowan University in the Smith University Center.

Francis Marion shot 60 percent in the second half to erase a five-point halftime deficit. Senior Shaunice Fulmore led FMU with 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half, while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Graduate student Briana Burgins tallied 13 points and six rebounds, and junior De'Ja Marshall added 11 points and six rebounds in her Patriot debut.

Wingate (1-2) scored the first four points, but FMU evened the score at 8-8 on an offensive stick back by junior Tatyana McClaney with 4:25 left in the first quarter.

Courtney Robinson knocked down a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 13-10 and Wingate led 14-12 at the end of the period. Robinson led the Bulldogs with 13 points and five assists.

The Bulldogs held Francis Marion without a field goal for the opening 6:27 of the second quarter, as Wingate took a 24-13 advantage. Seven consecutive points by Burgins brought the Patriots to within 24-20 with 1:39 left before halftime. Wingate led 26-21 at intermission as FMU managed only 7-of-23 shooting over the opening 20 minutes.

A three-pointer by Gillespie knotted the score at 32-32 with 4:23 remaining in the third quarter. Another three by Gillespie gave the Patriots their first lead at 35-32. Wingate rallied to take a 38-36 advantage following two free throws by Jordan Quick with 1:02 left. FMU closed the quarter with a 6-0 run, including two hoops by Fulmore to lead 42-38.

A jumper by Fulmore to open the final stanza expanded the lead to 44-38. Layups by Marshall and Fulmore stretched the margin to 48-40. Back-to-back three-point buckets by Gillespie and Fulmore and a basket by Burgins gave FMU its largest advantage at 56-42 with 4:37 left.

Wingate trimmed the margin to 57-52 with 48 ticks left, but free throws by Gillespie and Marshall, and a lay-in by Marshall at the final horn, accounted for the seven-point margin.

Francis Marion shot 45.8 percent from the floor, including 5-of-11 from behind the arc, and hit 12-of-22 free throws. The Patriots held Wingate to 29.8 percent shooting and only one three-pointer on 14 attempts. The Bulldogs hit 19-of-27 charity tosses.
