Cougars defeat FMU Women 75-60 in PBC Quarterfinals

COLUMBUS, GA – Francis Marion University senior guard Khai Chandler scored 19 points to surpass 1,500 for her career, but Columbus State University used a 16-2 run to open the fourth quarter to capture a 75-60 win over the Patriots, Wednesday evening (Feb. 28) in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

FMU, seeded sixth in the tournament, ends its season with a 16-12 record, while the third-seeded Cougars (19-8) advance to Saturday's tournament semifinals.

Chandler ends her career with 1,509 points, tying Jeannette Alston for 10th place on the Patriot scoring list.  Sophomore guard Abigail Bullock scored 14 points, while junior forward Lauryn Bush tallied a career-high nine points off the bench.

Sophomore forward Shaunice Fulmore scored six points as did senior forward Kristin Tines, who also hauled down a team-high 11 rebounds in her final contest.

Tatiana Wayne led Columbus State with 28 points on 13-of-24 shooting, while Chrisalyn Boston registered 15 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.

CSU scored the game's first four points, but FMU quickly responded with a three-pointer by Chandler and a lay-in by Bullock to forge a 5-4 lead.  The score was later deadlocked at both 7-7 and 9-9, before the Cougars scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 14-9 advantage.

The margin grew to 20-13, but a bucket by Bush trimmed the deficit to 20-15.  A lay-in by Chandler with 2:22 left before halftime had the Patriots trailing by only six (30-24). However, Columbus State closed the second period with an 8-3 spurt to claim a 38-27 advantage at intermission.

The Cougars led by as many as 14 points in the third period, but Francis Marion used its own 13-6 spurt to end the quarter that drew the Patriots to within seven points at 53-46.  However, CSU scored 16 of the first 18 points of the final quarter to assume a commanding 69-48 advantage midway through the period.

Francis Marion connected on 34.7 percent of its field goal attempts and was 5-of-12 at the free throw line.  The Cougars shot 40.0 percent from the field and were 8-of-13 at the charity stripe.  Both squads made a trio of three-pointers.

FMU committed only 11 turnovers, but a 62-42 rebounding edge helped CSU also record a 25-10 lead in second-chance points.

In addition to Chandler and Tines, senior guard Keanua Williams also player her final game in the red, white, and blue.
