Defense aids Patriot Women to 65-50 road win at UNCP

PEMBROKE, NC – A quick first-quarter start and a stifling defense through three quarters helped Francis Marion University grab a 65-50 road win over UNC Pembroke, Wednesday evening (Feb. 21) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 15-11 overall and 12-9 in the conference.  FMU will host Georgia College for Senior Day on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the team's regular-season finale.

Senior guard Khai Chandler led the Patriots with 19 points and seven rebounds, while junior forward Shaunice Fulmore tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Chandler moved past Martha Williamson to claim 12th place on the Patriot career scoring list with 1,475, while Fulmore moved by Kathy Flaten for 16th position with 1,324 points.

FMU sophomore 6-2 center Tatyana McClaney came off the bench and scored a career-high 14 points, while hauling down eight rebounds and blocking two shots.

Senior forward Nyla Allen led UNCP (10-15, 8-13) with 15 points and seven rebounds.

FMU only trailed at 2-0, and took the lead for good with a 17-2 run that snapped an early 4-4 deadlock.  The Patriots led 21-8 at the end of the first quarter as FMU held the Braves to 3-of-13 shooting.

Francis Marion led by as many as 18 points in the second period before taking a 35-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.  The Braves connected on only 2-of-17 field goal attempts in the quarter and finished the half shooting 16.7 percent.

With the margin at 13 points at 37-24, Fulmore sparked a 18-3 run that gave FMU an insurmountable 55-27 advantage.  Francis Marion led 56-31 at the end of the period.

A late 9-0 UNCP run in the final period allowed the Braves to cut the margin under 20 points.

Francis Marion shot 41.3 percent from the floor and was 9-of-15 at the foul line.  UNCP finished the game at 29.7 percent shooting, but was 0-of-6 from behind the three-point arc and only 12-of-24 at the charity stripe.
