Third-quarter Flagler run sinks Patriots 64-52

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – An 18-4 third-quarter run by Flagler College put the game out of reach against Francis Marion University as the Saints went on to a 64-52 win on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion drops to 14-11 overall and 11-9 in the conference, while the Saints improve to 17-7 and 14-5.  FMU plays at UNC Pembroke on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., before returning home to host Georgia College for Senior Day, Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m.

Patriot junior forward Shaunice Fulmore led all scorers with 17 points, while Khai Chandler followed with 13 points and a team-high tying eight rebounds.

Senior forward Tiffany Hodge lead Flagler with 15 points, followed by junior Malaysia Robinson with 12 points. Junior 6-5 center Tabitha Odabe had 11 points and gathered in 16 rebounds.

The Patriots kept the game close in the first quarter with five lead changes and four ties. With the game tied 14-14 at the 2:07 mark of the first stanza, the Saints would go on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and take a 20-14 advantage heading into the second quarter.

Flagler would keep their momentum up as they pushed their lead out to double-digits (24-14) at the 7:41 mark of the second stanza, and again at 30-19 with 3:33 remaining until halftime. The Patriots would cut the lead more than in half (31-26) after a buzzer-beating layup by sophomore Abigail Bullock as the teams went into the locker rooms for intermission.

FMU connected on the first bucket of the third quarter as Fulmore made a layup, but the Saints responded with their 18-4 run to take a 49-32 advantage. Fulmore converted a three-point play to end the quarter with Flagler up 49-35.

The Saints led by as many as 20 in the final quarter.  FMU did trim the deficit to 10 at 58-48 with four minutes left after a three-pointer by senior Keanua Williams.  However, Flagler scored the next four points to secure the win.

Francis Marion shot 29.6 percent from the field and went 6-of-12 at the free throw line, while the Saints connected on 42.1 percent of their field goal attempts and were 15-of-20 at the stripe.
