Francis Marion signs Columbia cager

Francis Marion University women's basketball coach Jeri Porter has announced the signing of 5-9 forward Jayla Bolden of Columbia, S.C., to a national letter of intent during the recent early signing period.

Bolden is a senior at Ridge View High School, where she plays for coach Terrence Gibson.  As a junior, she averaged 7.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game while helping lead the Blazers to a 22-4 overall mark, a perfect 10-0 region record, and an appearance in the third round of the AAAA state playoffs. She connected on 53 percent of her field goal attempts and 63 percent of her free throws.

Bolden played her freshman and sophomore seasons at Crestwood High School in Sumter.

She has also played with the SC 76ers AAU program.

"Jayla can score and we feel she is a good fit for our system," Porter said. "She can face up to the basket and hit the 15-foot jumper, as well as possessing the ability to put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim.  She can also play with her back to the basket. She is a slightly larger version of our current starting four player (senior Briana Burgins). We are excited about what Jayla will add to our program, and she will complement our other early signee (5-10 post player Zaria Woods of Lancaster, S.C.)."

The Francis Marion women currently own a 3-3 record and are in a break for exams.  The Patriots return to action on Dec. 17 with a 1:30 p.m. home contest against Georgia Southwestern State University.
