FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior forward Briana Burgins scored 17 of her season-high 23 points in the second half as the Patriots overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to claim a 68-61 victory over the University of Montevallo, Thursday evening (Jan. 5) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

FMU improves to 7-5 overall and now owns a share of the East Division lead with a 2-1 league mark.  The Patriots will play host to 23rd-ranked Clayton State University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Burgins also hauled down 14 rebounds to register her fourth double-double of the season, while pilfering five steals. She connected on 7-of-11 field goal attempts and was 9-of-13 at the foul line – where the Patriots enjoyed a sizable advantage.  FMU was 23-of-35 at the stripe, while the Falcons were only 9-of-16.

FMU sophomore Shaunice Fulmore scored 11 of her 19 points also after intermission, while freshman guard Abigail Bullock added 16 points and six rebounds in her first collegiate start.

Sophomore forward Ashley Dunstan led Montevallo (3-7, 0-3) with 18 points, but scored only two over the final 20 minutes.  Senior forward Morgan Smith posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite a slow shooting start, Francis Marion owned a 19-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 9-5 spurt over the final three minutes.

The Patriots made only 4-of-19 shots in the second period and were outscored 26-10 by the Falcons, who carried a 41-29 advantage into the locker room at halftime.  A 14-5 run by Montevallo over the last five-and-a-half minutes helped account for the margin.

A 12-2 run by Francis Marion to open the third quarter trimmed the deficit to 43-41, capped by a fast-break lay-in by Burgins.  Back-to-back buckets in the lane by Fulmore and Bullock gave FMU its first lead of the second half at 49-47 as the third period came to a close.

The Falcons responded by scoring the first seven points of the final period to go back on top 54-49.  The margin remained at five (56-51) as the clock wound under four minutes.  An layup and a three-point play, both by Burgins, quickly knotted the score at 56-56 and ignited an 11-2 run that put the Patriots up 62-58 entering the final minute.  FMU nailed all six of its free throws in the final 41 seconds to seal the win.

Francis Marion shot 27.6 percent from the floor, including 3-of-16 from beyond the arc, while Montevallo hit 41.0 percent of its attempts from the field and was 2-of-12 from three-point range.

The Patriots forced 30 Montevallo miscues that were converted into 28 points.
