Patriots sail past Vikings with second-quarter spurt

FLORENCE, SC – A trio of three-point field goals by Francis Marion University spurred a 14-0 spurt to start the second quarter and the Patriots cruised to a 67-47 non-conference win over Elizabeth City State University, Tuesday evening (Nov. 22) in women's basketball action.

The Patriots even their season mark at 3-3, while the Vikings drop to 0-4.  FMU will return to action on Dec. 3 at Pfeiffer University in its final pre-exams contest.

As she has in five of the six games this season, sophomore Shaunice Fulmore led Francis Marion in scoring with 15 points.  She entered the contest leading the nation in field goal attempts and Tuesday connected on a tidy 7-of-15 from the floor, while hitting 1-of-2 free throws.

Junior forward Briana Burgins registered 13 points and six rebounds, while senior point guard TeTe Flowers chipped in 12 points and five assists.  Junior center Kristin Tines added a career-high eight points, thanks to a perfect shooting night of 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 at the foul line.

Sophomore guard Jalyn Brown led ECSU with nine points, while a trio of Vikings scored eight: Anaya Eason, Tantania Brown, and Latrina Gatling.

The Patriots trailed 11-10 after the opening period. Three-pointers by Flowers, junior Khai Chandler, and freshman Abagail Bullock ignited the 14-0 run to start the second quarter as FMU took the lead for good. The margin was 11 points (34-23) at intermission.

FMU connected on 8-of-15 shots in the third period.  The Vikings did trim the deficit under double digits once, at 38-29 with 6:39 left in the stanza, but the Patriots gradually pulled away to an 18-point advantage at 53-35.

A 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter upped the margin to 28 points at 63-35 following two free throws by junior center Courtney Wood.

For the game, Francis Marion shot 37.5 percent from the field, including 4-of-17 from three-point range, and was 15-of-21 at the free throw line.  Elizabeth City State connected on 40.9 percent of its field goal attempts, including 1-of-6 from long range, and was 10-of-20 at the charity stripe.

FMU committed a season-low 11 turnovers, while forcing 22 and leading 23-11 in points-off-turnovers.
