Lander edges Patriot Women 75-65 in East Division clash

FLORENCE, SC – Buoyed by five players scoring in doubles figures, first-place Lander University pulled away in the final quarter to register a 75-65 win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Feb. 3) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion drops to 17-5 overall and 8-5 in the PBC and remains in third place in the East Division standings, now two games behind the co-leaders.  The Patriots will celebrate Homecoming 2016 on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. clash against fourth-place Flagler College.  Admission to the contest is free.

Senior guard Camille Dash led FMU with 15 points and four assists, while freshman forward Shaunice Fulmore added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench.  Senior forward Alaysia Watts just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward Briana Burgins tallied seven points and a season-high 15 rebounds.

Senior guard Bre Crum led Lander (16-6, 10-3) with 23 points, seven assists, six steals, and five rebounds.  Reserve guard Sannayyiah Johnson netted 14 points, including a trio of long three-pointers.

Despite trailing for much of the first period, Francis Marion closed the quarter with a 13-2 run to grab a 20-16 advantage.  In similar fashion, Lander trailed for the majority of the second quarter, but used a late 10-2 spurt to assume a 38-35 lead at halftime.

FMU rallied to take a 48-47 lead after a layup by Fulmore with 3:52 left in the third quarter.  A little more than a minute later, Fulmore knotted the contest at 50-50 with another lay-in.  The Patriots missed their next four shots and four of six free throws allowing the Bearcats to take a 55-52 lead at the end of the period.

With 6:32 remaining, Francis Marion trailed by only four (60-57), but Lander scored nine of the game's next 10 points to grab a 69-58 lead with 3:54 remaining.

The Patriots held a commanding 46-28 advantage in rebounding, but Lander led 22-9 in points-off-turnover as the Patriots committed 20 miscues.

Francis Marion shot 39.3 percent from the floor – but only 28.6 percent over the final 20 minutes – was only 1-of-10 from beyond the arc, and managed just 16-of-27 at the charity stripe.  Lander connected on 45.2 percent of its shots, was 8-of-19 from three-point territory, and hit 11-of-19 free throws.
