Fourth-Quarter Defense lifts FMU Women past Pirates 60-47

FLORENCE, SC – Clinging to three-point lead entering the fourth quarter, Francis Marion University held Armstrong State University to 2-of-11 shooting over the final 10 minutes and the Patriots eased away for a 60-47 win, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 9) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion, now 13-2 overall, wins its third straight conference game to improve to 4-2 and move into a tie for second place in the PBC East Division standings.  The Patriots will travel up Interstate 95 to face local-rival UNC Pembroke on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The next home game for FMU will be Monday, Jan. 18, at 1:30 p.m. against the University of North Georgia.

Sophomore Khayani Chandler came off the FMU bench to lead the Patriots with 17 points and six steals.  Senior center Alaysia Watts and freshman forward Shaunice Fulmore each tallied 11 points and senior guard Camille Dash added 10 points, including four key free throws in the final two minutes.

Senior guard Shermika Harris led Armstrong State (9-6, 1-5) with 13 points, while Brigitta Barta and Alexia Somerset each scored nine points.

The FMU defense also forced 27 Armstrong State turnovers which were converted into 31 points.

The Pirates scored the game's opening bucket, but Francis Marion responded with nine straight points.  FMU led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. 

Chandler accounted for the entirety of an 8-0 spurt to open the second period, which extended the FMU advantage to 21-10.  A jumper by Watts gave Francis Marion its largest lead of the game at 31-17 with 4:35 left before halftime.  However, the Pirates answered with an 11-1 run to close the stanza and trim the deficit to 32-28 at intermission.

Armstrong State opened the third quarter with a 7-2 spurt, taking its first lead (35-34) since the game's first minute when Somerset scored on a layup. A pair of free throws by Barta later gave the Pirates a 41-40 advantage, but Chandler turned a Pirate miscue into a fast-break lay-in and Fulmore connected on a pair of free throws to give FMU a 44-41 lead at the end of three.

Watts and Chandler combined for all 10 points in a 10-2 FMU spurt to open the final quarter that pushed the margin to 54-43.  In addition to holding Armstrong State to only two baskets over the final 10 minutes, the Patriot defense also forced nine turnovers in the decisive period.

Francis Marion shot 31.8 percent from the floor, including 4-of-20 from beyond the three-point arc, and hit 14-of-23 free throws.  Armstrong State connected on 35.3 percent of its field goal attempts, was 2-of-10 from three-point territory, and made 9-of-16 attempts from the line.
