#15 Columbus State edges Patriot Women 79-75

FLORENCE, SC – Fifteenth-ranked Columbus State University used an 8-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter to take the lead for good then held off a late rally by Francis Marion University to claim a 79-75 victory, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 2) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (10-2, 1-2) will head to Georgia to face the Augusta University Jaguars on Monday at 5:30 p.m. The next home game for Francis Marion will be Saturday, Jan. 9, against Armstrong State University at 1:30 p.m.

Junior point guard TeTe Flowers paced the Patriots with 16 points and seven assists, while senior forward Alaysia Watts tallied 16 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Briana Burgins scored 13 points on 6-7 shooting, while freshman Shaunice Fulmore registered 12 points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench.

Senior 5-9 guard Michelle Mitchell led the CSU attack (9-1, 3-0) with 27 points and 12 rebounds.  Twenty-three of her points came after halftime.  Senior center Ashley Johnson added 17 points as five Cougars scored in double digits, and only two points came from the Columbus State bench.

Francis Marion found themselves behind early on as the Cougars took a 6-2 lead. The Patriots would battle back to take a 13-10 advantage late in the first quarter on buckets by Fulmore and Burgins. The Patriot lead would balloon to as many as eight points with 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter on a jumper in the lane by Watts. Columbus State would end the second quarter with the final two points from the free throw line to trim the margin to 35-29 at the break.

The Patriots led 38-31 early in the third period, but a 15-8 spurt by the Cougars knotted the score at 46-46.  A fast-break lay-in by Fulmore and a three-pointer by junior guard Victoria Dye stretched the margin back to 51-46, but CSU trimmed the deficit to 53-52 at the end of the quarter.

Columbus State took the lead for good at 54-53 seconds into the final quarter on a substitution technical foul on the Patriots.  CSU added the next six points to assume a 60-53 advantage with 8:07 left. The Cougars stretched their lead to 10 points (68-58) with 4:52 remaining in the game.

Trailing 72-67, Flowers hit a nice layup to cut the deficit to one possession with 2:28 remaining and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.  A three-pointer by Dye with two ticks left further cut the margin to 77-75, but Britteny Tatum sealed the CSU win with a pair of free throws.

Francis Marion connected on 45.2 percent of its field goal attempts, was 5-of-15 from three-point territory, and hit 14-of-20 free throws.  Columbus State made 43.8 percent of its shots, while going 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, and 20-of-24 at the charity stripe.
