FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University returned from its Christmas break in a taking mood, converting 37 Converse College turnovers into 35 points, as the Patriots defeated the Valkyries 78-47, Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 30) in non-conference women's basketball action.
FMU improved to 10-1 on the season and remained unbeaten at home. The Patriots will play host to nationally ranked and Peach Belt Conference pre-season favorite Columbus State University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Sophomore Khayani Chandler led Francis Marion with 19 points, while a trio of Patriots tallied 13 points apiece: senior Alaysia Watts, junior Victoria Dye, and sophomore Briana Burgins. Watts recorded another double-double with 11 rebounds, while junior point guard TeTe Flowers scored seven points and handed out seven assists.
Senior guard Camille Dash and Dye both registered five steals as the Patriots poached Converse for 23 steals.
Freshman guard Brianna James led the Valkyries (2-6) with 14 points.
Converse took an early 6-2 advantage, but FMU responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. The Patriots led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter before exploding for 31 points in the second period and grabbing a 46-22 halftime lead.
Francis Marion led 29-20 but closed the second quarter with a 17-2 spurt over a span of only 2:25.
The Patriots led 60-33 at the close of the third period.
Francis Marion shot 38.8 percent from the field, including 8-of-22 from behind the three-point arc, but did struggle at the foul line, making only 8-of-21 attempts. Converse converted on 39.6 percent of its field goal attempts, but only 1-of-10 from three-point territory. The Valkyries also struggled at the charity stripe, hitting 8-of-25.
