Patriot Women trounce Trojans 79-48

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore forward Khayani Chandler scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds and 16th-ranked Francis Marion University led from start-to-finish in a 79-48 non-conference win over the University of Mount Olive, Tuesday evening (Dec. 8) in women's college basketball action.

At 8-0, Francis Marion has equaled the fifth-best start in team history – previously posted by the 2009-10 squad that finished 27-5 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament.  The Patriots will have to wait until after exams to take aim at the third-best start (9-0) when they open Peach Belt Conference play on the road at the University of Montevallo on Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m. (Central Time).

The next home contest for Francis Marion will be Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. against Converse College.

FMU scored the game's opening two hoops and jumped to a 9-4 advantage on the strength of three-pointers by Dye, Alaysia Watts, and Flowers.  Mount Olive trimmed the margin to 11-8, but Francis Marion responded with a three-pointer by Dye and a fast-break lay-in by sophomore Briana Burgins.  The Patriots led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.

That advantage quickly grew to double-digits as FMU opened the second quarter with an 11-2 spurt that included contributions from five different Patriots.  Minutes later, Francis Marion closed the period with its second 11-2 spurt that gave the Patriots a 42-20 halftime advantage.

FMU, which entered the game averaging only 4.1 made three-pointers per contest, was 7-of-14 from long range over the opening 20 minutes.

The margin never dipped below 22 points during the final two periods.  Francis Marion's largest lead came at 34 points on two occasions, the final time at 73-39 after a lay-up by sophomore center Courtney Wood.

Francis Marion also entered the game ranked 41st nationally in offensive rebounding.  Against the Trojans, FMU registered a 21-7 edge on the offensive glass that translated into an 18-2 lead in second-chance points.
