Fulmore and Patriots ward off Wolves for 67-61 win

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Shaunice Fulmore scored 16 second-half points and Francis Marion University converted 13 second-half Newberry College turnovers into 20 points as the undefeated Patriots downed the Wolves 67-61, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 28) in non-conference women's college basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 6-0 – only two wins shy of last year's season total of eight – and the Patriots have yet to surrender more than 65 points in any game this season.  FMU will play at Shaw University on Dec. 5 at 2 p.m., while the next home contest for the Patriots will be Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. against the University of Mount Olive.

Fulmore connected on 6-of-8 field goal attempts and 4-of-4 free throws over the 15:09 of the game to account for her team-high total, which was only one shy of her career high set on Wednesday.

Senior guard Camille Dash tallied 11 points and six assists, while senior Alaysia Watts and sophomore Briana Burgins both registered identical stat lines of 10 points and seven rebounds.  Junior point guard TeTe Flowers added seven points and five assists.

Freshman 6-2 center Meg Essex led Newberry (2-4) with 19 points and four assists.  Sophomore guard Nicola Handreck scored 15 points, including a 10-of-12 day at the free throw line, and handed out five assists.

The Patriots only trailed once during the first quarter – at 4-2 in the early going – but never led by more than six points.  After owning a 17-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter, FMU managed only seven points on 2-of-13 shooting in the second quarter.  However, Francis Marion left for the locker room still clinging to a 24-23 lead.

Newberry took the lead on the opening bucket of the third quarter and led by four, 38-34, with 3:30 remaining in the period.  FMU scored six consecutive points to regain the lead and finished the quarter still owning a one-point margin at 46-45.

A basket in the lane by Essex to open the final quarter put Newberry on top 47-46, but that would be the Wolves' final advantage.  Francis Marion responded with a 13-2 spurt that included six points from Fulmore to grab the game's largest lead at 59-49 with 4:30 remaining.

Newberry answered with seven straight points to pull to within 59-56 with 3:05 left, but Watts canned a three-pointer and Dash came up with a steal that led to a fast-break bucket by Burgins to push the margin back to eight (64-56).

A steal and lay-in by Fulmore at the 1-minute mark sealed the victory for the Patriots.  After shooting only 29 percent over the opening 20 minutes, FMU connected on 62 percent of its shots after halftime.

FMU shot 45.6 percent for the game, including 3-of-11 from three-point range, and hit 12-of-16 foul shots.  Newberry connected on 46.7 of its shots, but was only 4-of-16 from beyond the arc, and made 15-of-18 charity tosses.

The Patriots also led 10-0 in second-chance points.
