Chandler & Fulmore pace FMU past Broncos 69-53

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Khayani Chandler and freshman Shaunice Fulmore combined for 37 points off the Francis Marion University bench to help spark the unbeaten Patriots to a 69-53 win over Fayetteville State University, Wednesday evening (Nov. 25) in non-conference women's college basketball action.

Francis Marion (5-0) will play host to Newberry College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Chandler scored 20 points in only 24 minutes of action, while Fulmore added 17 points, three blocked shots, and three steals.  Senior forward Alaysia Watts just missed her third consecutive double-double as she added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Junior forward Makayla Williams led Fayetteville State (3-3) with 13 points and five rebounds, while 6-4 senior center Bria Robinson chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

Francis Marion trailed only once, at 2-0 after Robinson connected on the game's opening bucket.  A 7-2 spurt to end the first quarter opened the Patriot advantage to 19-13.

The Patriots held the Broncos to only two made baskets in the second quarter as the lead swelled to 36-20 at intermission.  The final two baskets of the period both came via a steal and fast-break layups by Fulmore and Chandler.

Fayetteville State started the third period with consecutive layups to trim the margin to 12 points (36-24), but that would be as close as the Broncos would get.  FMU responded with a 10-4 spurt that extended the lead to 18 points at 46-28 following a three-pointer by Fulmore.  The Patriots led 52-34 at the end of the third quarter.

Francis Marion would lead by as many as 30 at 69-39 after a bucket by Watts, before Fayetteville State closed the game with a 14-0 run.

FMU forced 28 Bronco turnovers which resulted in 30 points, while the Patriots led 15-7 in second-chance points and 43-17 in bench scoring.  Francis Marion is ranked 39th in Division II in offensive rebounding.

The Patriots shot 40.6 percent from the floor, including 3-of-14 from behind the arc, and were a near-perfect 10-of-11 at the foul line.  Fayetteville State connected on 45.8 percent of its field goal attempts, was 3-of-7 from three-point range, and was 6-of-11 at the charity stripe.

Senior guard Camille Dash directed the Patriot offense – as point guard TeTe Flowers suffered through foul trouble for much of the night – and registered four points, six assists, and five steals.
