Extra Watts power Patriots past Crusaders 69-55

DAHLONEGA, GA – Senior forward Alaysia Watts scored a career-high 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting and pulled down seven rebound to power Francis Marion University to a 69-55 victory over North Greenville University, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) on the second day of the Peach Belt Conference/Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Challenge in Dahlonega, Ga.

Francis Marion opens 2-0 for the first time in three seasons.  The Patriots will travel to NCAA Division I opponent UNC Greensboro on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.  FMU's home opener will be Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m, against Pfeiffer University.

Sophomore forward Briana Burgins posted her second career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while junior guard Victoria Dye added 12 points.  Junior point guard TeTe Flowers, who led the Patriots in scoring on Friday, directed the FMU offense with six assists and six rebounds, while committing only one turnover in 31 minutes.

As a team, again the Patriots took care of the ball committing only nine turnovers while forcing 18 Crusader miscues.  FMU led 25-9 in points-off-turnovers.

Ty Broadwater led North Greenville (0-2) with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

Francis Marion trailed only once – when Broadwater opened the game by scoring on a layup.  FMU answered with 10 consecutive points and would lead 20-14 at the end of the first quarter, 32-30 at halftime, and 48-40 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

After North Greenville closed the gap to two points at halftime, Francis Marion scored the first eight points of the third period. The Patriots' largest lead came at 67-49 following a three-point play by Burgins with two minutes left in the game.  FMU outscored the Crusaders 37-25 over the final 20 minutes.

Francis Marion connected on 41.5 percent of its field goal attempts, including 5-of-13 three-point attempts, and was 10-of-15 at the charity stripe.  North Greenville shot 36.8 percent from the field, was 7-of-19 from beyond the arc, and missed only one of its seven free throw attempts.
