Late free throws propel Patriots past Saints

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Senior guard Cy'erra Mills hit two free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal a Francis Marion University 53-50 victory over Flagler College, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

With the win, FMU (7-16, 4-10) breaks a seven-game losing spell and captures its first road victory since the opening weekend of the season.  Francis Marion will return to the Smith University Center for a pair of home games this coming week, against Armstrong State University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., and against Georgia Southwestern State university on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 1:30 p.m.

FMU freshman forward Courtney Wood paced the Patriots with 12 points and five rebounds.  All 12 of her points came in the opening half. Freshman frontcourt mate Khayani Chandler registered nine points, while Mills tallied eight points.  Freshman guard Briana Burgins contributed five points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Two Flagler (7-14, 4-10) players recorded double-doubles in the contest.  Senior center Treva Mason recorded 15 points and 17 rebounds, and junior guard Teosha Ray tallied 11 points and ten boards.

In the opening 20 minutes, the lead switched hands nine times and there were four ties.  Flagler held the largest lead of the first 20 minutes at 22-17, but FMU closed the half on a 6-0 run.  Wood hit a fast-break jumper at the first-half buzzer to give the Patriots a 23-22 halftime advantage.

After a Mason layup put Flagler in front 26-25 early in the second half, Francis Marion recaptured the lead on a layup by junior forward Alaysia Watts. FMU never trailed again.

The Patriots led by as many as six on three occasions, the final time at 43-37 with 6:28 remaining.  FMU held a 51-46 advantage with 29 seconds left, but four free throws by the Saints cut the margin to 51-50 with 16 ticks remaining.

Following Mills' made free throws, the Patriot smothering defense prevented the Saints from attempting a shot in the waning seconds.

Francis Marion shot a sizzling 63.2 percent in the second half, while holding Flagler to just 30.2 percent shooting for the game.  Both teams forced 18 turnovers, but the Patriots outscored Flagler in points-off-turnovers 17-5.  While Flagler outrebounded FMU 45-35, the Patriots exceeded the Saints in bench points 23-12.
