Patriot Women drop squeaker at the buzzer 67-65

FLORENCE, SC – Young Harris College freshman guard Jazmine Knight scored her only two points of the game on a running layup as time expired to knock off Francis Marion University by a 67-65 count, Saturday (Jan. 17) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (6-11, 3-5) will hit the road for two consecutive conference contests, beginning with a 1:30 p.m. match at the University of North Georgia on Monday.

Freshman forward Khayani Chandler led the way for the Patriots with 15 points, while senior guard Cy'erra Mills added 14 points and five rebounds.  Freshman center Courtney Wood came off the FMU bench to tally 11 points.

Young Harris (7-8, 4-4) hit just nine of its 30 field goals in the opening period, but shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) in the second stanza.  Senior center Peyton Robertson led three Mountain Lions players in double figures with 14 points.

After trailing for only 39 seconds in the first half, Francis Marion took a 37-32 advantage into intermission.  The Patriots maintained that lead until senior center Kaycee Cash connected on a layup to give the rallying Mountain Lions their first edge of the second half at 50-49 with 9:53 remaining.  However, a Chandler jumper helped FMU recover the advantage, 58-56 with 5:01 left.

A short jumper by Chandler again put the Patriots up 65-63 with less than one minute remaining, but Young Harris freshman guard Briana Bell drained two free throws to tie the game with 33 ticks left.  Following a missed Mills' three-pointer with 4.4 second remaining, Knight took an inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor and knocked down a buzzer-beating floater off-the-glass to claim the Mountain Lions' victory.

Young Harris was 21-of-26 at the charity stripe.  The Patriots shot a season-high 45.3 percent from the field, but were outrebounded 38-30 and connected on only 11-of-20 free throws.
