Francis Marion Women fall to Braves 55-50

FLORENCE, SC –  Freshman forward Stephanie Brown scored 14 points and senior guard Cy'erra Mills added 10, but Francis Marion University was unable to overcome a blistering second-half shooting performance by UNC Pembroke as the Braves claimed a 55-50 win, Wednesday night (Jan. 14) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (6-10, 3-4) will finish its three-game homestand on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. contest against Young Harris College.

Junior guard Camille Dash followed Brown and Mills in the scoring column with eight points.

UNCP (5-9, 3-4) made only four of its first 22 field goal attempts and shot 27.6 percent over the opening 20 minutes.  However, the Braves shot 63.6 percent (14-of-22) in the second stanza.  Sophomore guard Airico Williams led three UNCP players in double figures with 11 points.

Five points was the largest margin of the first half, an advantage thrice enjoyed by the Patriots at 15-10, 17-12, and 19-14.  However, a three-pointer by UNCP's Ebone Stevens provided the Braves a 23-21 halftime lead.

The Braves led by five early in the second stanza, but Francis Marion rallied to deadlock the contest at 33-33.  The Patriots took a 41-37 advantage after a layup by Brown with 8:29 remaining, but UNCP responded with nine consecutive points to take a 46-41 lead.

That margin extended to seven points, 55-48, in the final minute.

FMU finished the game shooting 31 percent from the floor, including 3-of-12 from three-point range.  The Patriots were 11-of-15 at the charity stripe, while UNCP was a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line.

Francis Marion did force 22 UNCP turnovers which the Patriots converted into 22 points.
