Wood helps Patriot Women swat Lady Yellow Jackets 97-42

FLORENCE, SC –  Freshman center Courtney Wood, making her first career start, tallied career-highs of 18 points and eight rebounds to help lead Francis Marion University to a 97-42 victory over Allen University, Monday evening (Jan. 12) in non-conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion has won three of its last four games to improve to 6-9.  FMU will return to Peach Belt Conference action on Wednesday night when the Patriots entertain local-rival UNC Pembroke for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

Wood connected on 7-of-10 field goal attempts and made all four of her free throws in only 24 minutes of action. 

Senior guard Cy'erra Mills scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while freshman forward Stephanie Brown added 13 points and six rebounds and junior Alaysia Watts and sophomore Danielle Pray chipped in 10 points apiece.  Watts added a career-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double, while Pray's point total was a career high.  All but one of the Patriots who logged minutes scratched in the scoring column.

Sophomore forward S'Nitra Mack led Allen (1-13) with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

FMU scored the game's first six points and never trailed.  The margin grew to 21-5 as the Lady Yellow Jackets missed on 16 of their first 17 field goal attempts.  Francis Marion's halftime lead of 45-16 was the largest margin of the opening half.

The Patriots' largest lead of the game (57 points) came in the final minute at 97-40 after a layup by Wood.

Francis Marion shot 43.7 percent for the game, including 53.7 percent over the final 20 minutes.  The Patriots held the Lady Yellow Jackets to 18.8 percent shooting, FMU's best defensive effort of the season.  Francis Marion held a commanding 69-41 rebounding advantage and led 27-9 in second-chance points.
