Mills spins Patriots past Jaguars in OT 75-73

FLORENCE, SC – Senior guard Cy'erra Mills hit a three-pointer near the right sideline with seven seconds left in overtime to give Francis Marion University a 75-73 win over GRU Augusta, Monday night (Jan. 5) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.  FMU freshman Briana Burgins sealed the win when she drew a charging foul with 2.6 ticks left on the Jaguars' ensuing possession after Mills' bucket.

The last-second victory evened Francis Marion's conference mark at 2-2 and upped the Patriots' season record to 4-8.  Francis Marion will entertain Flagler College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Freshman Khayani Chandler paced Francis Marion with a career-high 24 points.  Eighteen of her total came after halftime.  Freshman forward Stephanie Brown came off the Patriot bench to tally a career-high 16 points, pull down seven rebounds, and record five steals.

Junior guard Camille Dash added 10 points and a career-high seven assists, while Mills registered nine points and six assists, and junior post player Alaysia Watts eight points and seven rebounds.  Burgins only scored one bucket, but hauled down six rebounds and drew four charging fouls.

Junior guard Camille Gee led GRU Augusta (2-9, 1-3) with 19 points before fouling out.  Kelsey Fynaardt and Joshlyn Belcher each chipped in 11 points.

Belcher helped GRU Augusta force the extra session with a game-tying (64-64) three-pointer with 39 seconds remaining in regulation.  Both squads had opportunities to win the contest before overtime, but FMU turned the ball over and the Jaguars missed a jumper with three seconds left.

In overtime, the score was knotted at 66-66, 69-69, and 72-72 – the latter after Gee made the first of two free throws.  Her second make gave GRU Augusta a 73-72 advantage with :16 on the clock.  Following an FMU timeout with 11 seconds remaining, Dash hurled a long pass to Mills near the Patriot bench and she drained the game-winner.

FMU overcame an early six-point deficit and closed the first half with a 7-0 spurt to lead 40-35 at intermission.  GRU Augusta rallied to take a 51-43 lead as the Patriots missed 18 of their first 19 field goal attempts of the second stanza over a 12-minute span.

Trailing 53-45 with 7:11 left, Francis Marion scored 11 straight points to claim a 56-53 advantage. FMU expanded its margin to 62-54 before the Jaguars closed regulation with a 10-2 spurt.

Francis Marion shot 37.9 percent for the game, including 7-of-16 from three-point range, and was 18-of-24 at the foul line.  The Jaguars connected on 45.1 percent from the field, 7-of-18 from behind the arc, and hit 20-of-25 free throws.  FMU forced 28 Jaguars turnovers, which were converted into 24 points.
